Ducati DesertX
Storms to Victory at Erzbergrodeo
A Triumph in Twin-Cylinder Category
Eisenerz, Austria – June 14, 2023. Proving its unparalleled prowess and extraordinary performance, Ducati’s latest offering, the DesertX, made an extraordinary debut by clinching a stunning victory in the Iron Road Prolog at the world-renowned Erzbergrodeo, one of the most demanding motorcycle enduro events. This marks a monumental achievement for the Bologna-based manufacturer as the DesertX emerged as the only twin-cylinder bike to triumphantly qualify for the Superfinal of the Mitas Rocket Ride.
The Erzbergrodeo, long established as a pinnacle of endurance, skill, and sheer will, had its script rewritten as Antoine Meo, riding the newly minted Ducati DesertX, showcased an unforgettable performance. Antoine Meo, a multiple Enduro world champion, and European Supercross champion, demonstrated unmatched mastery and control over the DesertX, reaffirming Ducati’s dominance in the sphere of motor racing.
The Erzbergrodeo Triumph
The Erzbergrodeo, hosted amidst the iron ore quarries of Eisenerz, Austria, witnessed the power of the DesertX in all its glory. The Iron Road Prolog races, known for their thrilling and dramatic uphill climb, played a critical role in filtering through the horde of over 1200 riders to qualify for the final event. Antoine Meo, on the DesertX, turned up the heat in the twin-cylinder category, claiming victory in a show of raw power and exceptional skill. With a significant lead of 12 seconds in the first race and an extended advantage of 20 seconds in the second, Meo and the DesertX underscored their undeniable dominance, marking the potential of the Ducati’s latest masterpiece.
The Mitas Rocket Ride Race
Aside from the primary competition, the Mitas Rocket Ride, a gruelling side race, witnessed Antoine Meo’s relentless performance. This uphill challenge attracted 277 riders, battling it out in a knock-out style race, with Meo finishing sixteenth in the qualifying phase. He then raced through the stages, placing second in the last-16, third in the quarterfinals, and second in the semifinals. This consistent and formidable performance catapulted him to the Superfinal, making him the only twin-cylinder rider to achieve this feat, where he claimed an impressive fourth place, adding another feather to Ducati’s cap.
The Ducati DesertX: Unveiling a Powerhouse
Ducati’s DesertX, the first-ever Ducati equipped with a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel, symbolizes the manufacturer’s commitment to off-road performance. Powered by the potent Testastretta 11° desmodromic engine, the DesertX combines power, agility, and endurance, ideal for conquering the most challenging terrains.
For the Erzbergrodeo, the DesertX underwent tactical modifications to enhance its off-road aptitude. The fork and monoshock were revised to offer more suspension travel, and the Metzeler Six Days Extreme tyres, specifically designed for extreme enduro racing, were fitted to handle the demanding terrain of the race. These modifications, coupled with a special livery designed by the Centro Stile Ducati, ensured the DesertX not only participated but redefined the benchmarks for twin-cylinder bikes.
Ducati DesertX – A New Era for Twin-Cylinders
The result of the Erzbergrodeo has firmly placed the Ducati’s DesertX at the pinnacle of twin-cylinder bikes. With Antoine Meo’s master class handling, the DesertX didn’t just participate in the Erzbergrodeo; it dominated the event, marking the dawn of a new era in twin-cylinder racing. This victory underscores the motorcycle’s unrivalled off-road capabilities and reinforces Ducati’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of engineering and design.
The DesertX has successfully integrated Ducati’s road expertise with a strong off-road development orientation. Its liquid-cooled 937 cc Testastretta 11° desmodromic engine, capable of producing 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and a maximum torque value of 92 Nm at 6,500 rpm, ensures optimum gearshift use. Its ability to adapt to extreme racing conditions with a few modifications speaks volumes about its versatility.
The overall performance of the DesertX in the Erzbergrodeo proves that it is a game-changer in the world of off-road racing. Designed to tackle the most challenging terrains, it is equally comfortable and safe for travel and urban commuting, embodying the best of both worlds.
The success of the DesertX is a testament to Ducati’s ability to create high-performance motorcycles that cater to diverse rider needs. This victory is a clear signal that the DesertX is not just a powerhouse of performance but a signal of what to expect from the future of twin-cylinder motorcycles. With the DesertX, Ducati has once again shown why it remains a leader in the world of motor racing.
As we look to the future, it is clear that the DesertX, with its potent combination of performance, durability, and adaptability, is set to redefine the twin-cylinder segment.
