Mountain Climbing

Conquering the North California Backcountry Discovery Route on a BMW R1250GS

Imagine the crisp mountain air biting your face as you crest a summit, the roar of a BMW R1250GS echoing across the peaks. The North California Backcountry Discovery Route (N CABDR) offers a thrilling blend of endurance, skill, and pure adventure. With a staggering array of mountain summits and jaw-dropping views, this route challenges even the most seasoned riders. The North California Backcountry Discovery Route (N CABDR) is a thrilling test of endurance, skill, and a celebration of adventure.

Kicking off just outside Mammoth, CA, this journey plunges riders into the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Famous for its record-breaking snowfall, this region posed unique challenges for the route architects who waited for the thaw to finalize the path. But as the snow retreated, it unveiled a rider’s paradise.

The Journey Begins

The route revealed its essence from the first turn: a thrilling mix of flowing two-track trails snaking through the Inyo National Forest. The terrain was deceptive, sandy in unexpected places, demanding sharp focus even as the pine-scented air and sun-dappled paths drew smiles to our faces. Riding behind Richie Few, a BMW Performance Center instructor, was like chasing a phantom—his mastery of the 600-pound (270 kg) GS turned the trails into a stage. I could hardly believe my eyes as he launched the bike over whoops and carved through tight turns with effortless precision. Adrenaline coursed through me as I followed, my helmet camera capturing his every move.

The Ascent to Mt. Patterson

The route’s challenges escalated north of Bridgeport, where an advanced section beckoned. Rugged didn’t begin to describe it. We wrestled our bikes up rocky trails scarred by erosion, navigating hairpin turns and steep inclines that pushed our skills and machines to their limits. The air thinned as we climbed, each twist and turn revealing more of the alpine landscape. Finally, we emerged above the treeline, the towering summit of Mt. Patterson in sight.

The final climb was a test of nerve and skill. One by one, we ascended, the roar of engines mingling with the wind at 11,673 feet above sea level (3,558 masl). Standing atop the peak, surrounded by a sea of mountains, we felt a mix of triumph and disbelief. Ever the jokester, Richie grinned and said, “They don’t make ’em like this in South Carolina.”

Fire Lookouts and
Dizzying Heights

The route’s fascination with heights continued with a series of fire lookouts. Once vital for spotting wildfires, these historic structures offered unparalleled 360-degree views. After a grueling climb at the summit of Sierra Buttes, I parked my bike and gazed at the staircase leading to the lookout perched on a rocky pinnacle. “Man, that was tough,” I said, catching my breath. Richie’s grin widened. “I’m glad it wasn’t any harder than it was.”

The view was worth every ounce of effort. From 8,587 feet (2,615 meters), the world stretched endlessly in every direction, the landscape a patchwork of forests and peaks. Some in our group had the good sense to hike the last stretch, but the satisfaction of parking my bike below the lookout made the moment even sweeter.

A Hidden Oasis: Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Our spirits sagged as the weather turned foul, bringing rain and snow; hours of cold, wet riding left us longing for warmth. Then, a muddy side road led us to an unassuming cluster of buildings in a grassy clearing. At Richie’s urging, I approached one of the structures.

The door creaked open to reveal a scene straight out of a dream: a cozy saloon heated by a wood stove, its ceiling covered in dollar bills, and live music filling the air. Familiar faces greeted us—Owen Balduf and Chris Wilson, legendary riders and musicians, serenading the room. High fives and hugs gave way to dancing and storytelling as we soaked up this unexpected slice of heaven. That night, warmed by laughter and the saloon’s glow, the cold seemed a distant memory.

A Route Like No Other

Each BDR route showcases the unique character of its region, and the N CABDR excelled in every aspect. Its blend of technical challenges, breathtaking landscapes, and historical landmarks set it apart. Optional advanced sections pushed us to our limits, while the diverse terrain—from sandy trails to rocky summits—kept us engaged at every turn. As I reflected on the journey, one phrase came to mind: “All killer, no filler.”
