Gibson Guitar Auction Raises $20K for Charity

In a remarkable event that blends the legacy of Elvis Presley with the passion for classic motorcycles and guitars, a one-of-a-kind ‘Elvis Presley’ Triumph Bonneville motorcycle and matching Gibson Les Paul Guitar have fetched $20,000 at the Amelia Island Auction organized by Bonhams|Cars. This significant sale was conducted in support of the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation, which is dedicated to perpetuating Elvis’ enduring legacy of benevolence by backing various charitable endeavors.

The motorcycle, a pristine T120 model at the pinnacle of Triumph’s range, was adorned with a custom design by the renowned custom artist J Daar. It draws inspiration from the ‘Memphis Mafia’ Triumphs and the Bonneville Desert Sled that appeared in the 1968 film “Stay Away, Joe”. Additionally, it incorporates elements from Elvis’ iconic 1968 Comeback Special look, featuring a striking color palette of red, silver, and gold.

Prior to its sale, the motorcycle was showcased at the 2023 Barber Vintage Festival in Birmingham, Alabama, and was also on display at the Presley Motors Automobile Museum at Graceland, allowing fans and enthusiasts alike to admire its craftsmanship and historical significance.

Elvis Presley’s affinity for motorcycling, particularly Triumph motorcycles, is well-documented. His introduction to Triumph came in 1965, during a leisurely break with his close associates, the ‘Memphis Mafia’, at his Bel Air residence. After taking a friend’s new Triumph T120 Bonneville for a spin, Elvis was so impressed that he immediately arranged for a fleet of Triumphs to be purchased for his group, highlighting his spontaneous generosity and love for riding.

The auction lot also included a custom Gibson Les Paul guitar, graciously donated by Gibson and tailored by J Daar to match the motorcycle. This guitar choice harks back to a moment of generosity from Elvis during rehearsals for his ’68 Comeback Special, where he gifted a Les Paul guitar to his chef.

Paul Stroud, Chief Commercial Officer of Triumph Motorcycles, expressed his satisfaction with the auction’s outcome, highlighting the distinctive design of the T120 and the Gibson guitar as a fitting homage to Elvis Presley’s legend. Dana Carpenter, Executive Vice President, Entertainment at Authentic Brands Group, which owns Elvis Presley Enterprises, praised the collaboration with Triumph and the contribution of Gibson, noting that such partnerships help to further Elvis’ legacy of generosity and community spirit.

This unique auction celebrates the cultural icon’s love for motorcycles, music and supports charitable causes dear to Elvis, ensuring that his legacy of giving continues to make a positive impact.
