KTM Unveils Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) for a New Level of Performance and Versatility
KTM is raising the bar once again with the introduction of its Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), a revolutionary system that blends the convenience of an automatic gearbox with the control and sportiness that KTM riders expect. By combining advanced technology with its signature READY TO RACE focus, KTM’s AMT delivers a dynamic and user-friendly interaction across a variety of terrains and conditions.
The AMT allows riders to switch between two distinct modes: manual shifting in M Mode, where gears are changed without the need for a clutch, and a fully automated transmission in A Mode. Once the first gear is engaged, the system uses a centrifugal clutch to initiate forward motion by increasing the engine speed, providing a smooth start whether on a flat road or a steep incline. The system eliminates the risk of stalling, a major advantage, particularly when handling larger motorcycles.
KTM’s AMT introduces a P – N – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 gear sequence, with P standing for PARK. This feature prevents any unintended rolling by locking the gearbox, increasing safety when the motorcycle is stationary. Both PARK and NEUTRAL can only be selected using the shifting paddle on the handlebar, regardless of whether the engine is running, with the requirement of applying either the front or rear brake to engage the first gear.
Gear changes are executed through a sophisticated electromechanical shift actuator controlled by the bike’s ECU and Transmission Control Unit. Shifting speed is exceptionally fast, with transitions between gears occurring in just 50 milliseconds—on par with traditional transmissions equipped with KTM’s Quickshifter+.
The real standout feature of KTM’s AMT is M Mode, which retains a manual gear-shifting option. Riders can opt for either the traditional gear lever on the left side of the engine or the paddle shift located on the handlebar. This feature keeps the READY TO RACE spirit alive, allowing for a sportier and more engaged ride, while the transmission maintains its quick response and agility. The AMT system has been designed to preserve traditional gearbox proportions, ensuring that weight remains within a similar range to standard transmissions.
The AMT system also offers extensive customization options, with SHIFTING modes that work seamlessly with the RIDE modes, providing riders with the flexibility to fine-tune the bike to their specific preferences.
